Don’t recycle that newspaper!

… well, don’t recycle it if you can donate it.  The Peninsula Humane Society accepts newspaper as a donation.  They use it to line the cages of a number of the animals they keep there.

Check your local shelter’s wish list before going down there.  Last time I checked, Oakland Animal Services did not have newspaper as one of their wish list items.

3 Ways Recycling Can Benefit Haiti

As you all probably know, the people of Haiti continue their struggles to recover from the devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake on January 12, 2012.  We’ve all seen the messages urging us to donate to the relief efforts.  I would like to highlight a few with a recycling angle:

1.  I was at the Sports Basement store in San Francisco’s Mission District this evening.

For those of you who have heard of them, they are very socially-conscious as evident from their creative recycling efforts, e.g. old Crocs,  winter jackets, and wine corks.  But what stood out to me was that they, in concert with Operation Rainbow, are taking donations of crutches to aid the many victims with orthopedic injuries.

So, all you weekend warriors, dig out those old crutches from the garage and put them to good use.

2.  Recycle those old cellphones you’ve got stashed away in a drawer somewhere.

3.  Recycle those dollars.  Here’s a list of charities involved in the relief efforts.
